I support common sense gun policies that won’t affect responsible gun owners (like myself). Gun Violence Restraining Orders allow family, friends, and law enforcement to help people facing a crisis who, with a gun in their possession, might be a risk to themselves or others. I support Extreme Risk Protection Orders which allow police, with a court order, too remove a gun temporarily from someone who might be at risk of harming themselves or another person.
I believe it’s possible to protect the 2nd Amendment and protect families and communities from senseless gun violence. States that already require background checks for all purchases have fewer suicides by gun, fewer law enforcement officers shot and killed, and fewer women killed by an intimate partner.
Recent legislation to allow federal funding of research into gun violence and ways to reduce it without infringing on the rights of responsible gun owners makes sense. We can do more to prevent suicides by gun, and study how to best store guns at home to keep them out of the hands of children.
